You’re invited to join Zapproved & Cinder for a conversation with Liana Avendano on gender identity & pronouns.
Gender is a social construct and gender identity is deeply personal, but what does that even mean? How can a person simultaneously feel all the genders at once and no gender at all? What is the difference between gender identity and gender expression?
Gender is a complex subject and once you start learning about it, it feels like there is an endless amount of information to learn. That is because there is! As language evolves and our understanding evolves, we uncover more ways for people to be able to express their gender in a way that matches their gender identity.
Discover the way Liana has experienced being non-binary, what it took for them to get there, and how they find joy in their expression.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER
I am a queer, nonbinary, neurodivergent, Mexican, child of immigrants. This is the lens through which I see the world and approach my work. I grew up in Los Angeles and have lived in Portland for the last 4 years. I have spent my adult life challenging the oppressive systems in place that create barriers for anyone who does not belong to the dominant culture. My goal is to create strategies that eliminate those barriers. I am unapologetically myself as I navigate patriarchy and capitalism and I will always advocate for those who experience the most persistent forms of oppression. I have worked in many industries including the service industry. I believe that this has provided a perspective that adds to my knowledge and skills in addressing inequities in the workplace. I will continue this work until there is no work left to be done.
