A VIRTUAL HAPPY HOUR OF DISCOVERY
On March 11, 2021, we will meet our friends and supporters online for our annual fundraiser to celebrate our accomplishments over the past year.
Saturday Academy encourages students to follow their curiosity. Serving grades 2-12 in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) since 1983, we have paved the way for students to build their confidence and explore topics of interest to them outside of the school day. In the past year our students have become drone pilots, created animated movies and comic books, dissected dogfish sharks, learned to program, presented scientific research from their internships and tried on various careers at local businesses throughout the community.
We offer unique experiences that are not readily available elsewhere, and this year we managed to do so in the most challenging of circumstances. At the event we will celebrate our pivot from in-person to online classes, camps and internships. We will “Zoom In” on STEM education and Saturday Academy by providing updates on our work and a sampling of our highly engaging online Microscopy Class.
WHEN: Thursday, March 11, 2021 at 5 pm (or join us at 4:50 pm when a Saturday Academy chemist/mixologist stirs up our signature Discovery cocktail)
WHERE: Virtual webinar
RSVP DEADLINE: March 1, 2021
COST: Free or $50 for pre-event box shipped or delivered to your home
TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON FEBRUARY 1, 2021
ABOUT THE EVENT
The event with microscopy demonstration is free, but if you would like to receive a foldoscope (microscope) and samples to view during the event, along with dessert and the recipe for the Virtual Happy Hour of Discovery cocktail you can purchase a ticket for $50 and we will deliver or ship a pre-event box to your home.
Scientific Discoveries using Electron Microscopy is a one class offered by Saturday Academy. Students choose their own samples and analyze them using light microscopes and then connect with a professional microscopist and analyze the samples using electron microscopy. We invite you to participate. Portable foldscope microscopes – lens capable of magnification of ~140 – with a sample will be delivered to you for your own hands-on analysis. We will show you the analysis of a similar sample in the electron microscope. Microscopy is an analog for science — the more you observe, and with different instrumentation, the more you learn. And much of it is beautiful.
